By the time your kids reach their teenage years, you’ll have to find an alternative to homeschooling. Your best alternative might be a virtual high school.
Why is that?
OSSD Credits
Homeschooling becomes more complicated as your kids get older — particularly when they reach their teens. Teens will need to achieve a specific number of course credits in order to graduate with a high school diploma. A high-school diploma is crucial for applying to post-secondary programs — although, there are some exceptions for mature students. These course credits need to be received by an accredited school that’s approved by the Ministry of Education.
Now, this doesn’t mean that you will be forced to send your teen to an in-person high school. If that’s not the right fit for you, you can keep up a similar learning environment with the help of a virtual high school. An accredited virtual high school can offer the credit courses required for students to get their diplomas. They can also be inspected and approved by the Ministry of Education.
Complicated Subjects
Homeschooling a kindergartener will be much easier in terms of subject matter — you’ll tackle lessons on shapes, numbers and letters. As they get older, school subjects will get more challenging and the educational requirements they’ll have to meet will grow.
Once they’re a teenager, you might be as unfamiliar with the subjects as they are. Would you be comfortable teaching MHF4U (Grade 12 Advanced Functions)? CHC2P (Grade 10 Canadian History Since World War I)? SPH3U (Grade 11 Physics)?
A virtual high school will offer courses like MHF4U, CHC2P and SPH3U online. These courses will match the Ontario High School Curriculum. They will be taught through a series of pre-recorded lessons with the guidance of a certified, professional teacher.
So, as a parent, you don’t have to worry about refreshing your knowledge on challenging subjects or worse, worry that your lack of expertise will negatively affect your teen’s education. They’ll have the educational guidance that they really need.
Scheduling Around Teen-Life
Teens might want more of the freedom that virtual school offers, especially when it comes to their scheduling. And you might appreciate it, too!
Sleep Changes
Teenagers need more sleep. Virtual school allows your teen to start their classes in their own time when they’re well-rested.
On the other hand, in-person schools will require them to attend school at specific times and have classes beginning early in the morning. This could make them get a lot less sleep!
Sleep is essential for factors like concentration, problem-solving and mood regulation. So, giving them more time to sleep could make them perform better in school.
Part-Time Jobs
Plenty of high school students take on part-time jobs that allow them to have their own spending money and save up for long-term goals (buying their first car, paying for their university tuition, etc.). By enrolling in a virtual school, they have the opportunity to maneuver their lessons around their part-time work schedule without stress.
Extracurricular Activities
One of the most challenging parts of homeschooling is isolation. Your child might not get as much interaction as they would if they were enrolled in an in-person school. Having a flexible virtual high school schedule allows your teen to find time to socialize through extra-curricular activities, like sports games, art classes, volunteer groups and social clubs.
Standard homeschooling won’t be a great option when it comes to your teenagers. Consider a virtual high school instead!
