1. Transportation
News about the lack of truck drivers dominated headlines for weeks during the pandemic. While it may be less publicized now, the demand for transportation professionals is still high.
There are several routes to get into the transportation field. First, you can go through a company-sponsored training program and operate your employer’s equipment. This has the least startup costs, making it attractive to many job seekers. However, if you leave the job, you may be responsible for fees related to training costs.

To succeed in this role, you must have technical skills and the physical ability to lift, position, and secure large solar panels. Many companies offer on-the-job training that prepares you to handle the products they use.
7. Heavy Equipment Mechanics
Heavy equipment is needed for the many construction and infrastructure projects going on across the country; however, there is a shortage of qualified mechanics to make repairs and perform maintenance. If you have a background in repairing small equipment or vehicles, consider training to expand your capabilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that this industry can expect stronger than average job growth.
8. Massage Therapist
Not all in-demand careers are in construction or transportation trades. Many healthcare and personal services are almost always needed, too. One of those is massage therapy, which is increasingly recognized as beneficial for physical and emotional well-being. Massage therapists typically train through independent programs that last for several months, although requirements vary from state to state.
9. MRI Technologist
Magnetic resonance imaging is a commonly used diagnostic tool that requires specially trained technicians to operate. Community colleges usually offer training programs that last for a year or less. Jobs are widely available in hospitals, specialty doctors’ offices, and imaging centers.
10. Dental Hygienist
Becoming a dental hygienist is another healthcare opportunity that doesn’t require medical school. Every dentist’s office has at least one hygienist who does the majority of cleanings and prep work. They also assist with more complex procedures.
Landing a secure job with liveable wages is possible without a college degree. Look for industries that provide on-the-job training or that require technical skills available through short training programs.
